“Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!” Delights and Surprises at Cinema Society Screening

On Monday night the Cinema Society and Sony Pictures Classic hosted a screening of Josef Kubota Wladyka latest film, “Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty” at the Crosby Street Hotel.

The film follows recent widow and amateur ballroom dance enthusiast Haru (played by Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi) as she navigates grief and a potent crush on her new dance instructor played by Alberto Guerra. The film is equal parts tender and hysterical, swinging wildly from comedy to tragedy and back again, with slapstick and a dash of surrealism mixed in. It was a smash hit at Sundance earlier this year, winning the festival’s directing prize, and is absolutely worth checking out. And take your mother. She’ll love it.
