A Breath of Fresh Glamour at Ralph Lauren for Spring 2027

The collection opened with a cadre of looks in white and navy that, at first glance, looked like typical Ralph Lauren fare: white tops with white or navy trousers, minimalist navy dresses, sharply tailored jackets, a mandarin collar with a abundance of tiny buttons, all of it very much in keeping with the vision of American classic sportswear that Ralph Lauren has come to define over his brand’s nearly 60 year history. And yet, not. Because there were surprises hidden among those typically RL ensembles — a sex appeal, lightness, and playfulness that has something to offer people of all styles and ages, even if they wouldn’t necessarily think of themselves as Ralph Lauren’s typical customers.

The opening top, for example, the way it narrows to a point and shows off the hips, looks like something you might see on the members of Katseye in a different context. Or in this context — a sexier and more theatrical take on an typical all-white day look that might otherwise skew too conservative. The feather fringed jacket of look number two is giving Janis Joplin in heaven and could be just the thing to pull in customers with more of a rock-and-roll vibe than one might typically associate with Ralph Lauren.

Then there was that neat little cream striped vest with the matching pants — so much lovely volume and yet so trim at the waist and over the hips — looking like something a lesbian would wear to her Gatsby-themed wedding. And f9ollowed by a seemingly standard, high-necked navy dress, but this time with that seductive slash of skin down one side so that one could totally picture on a poorly behaved celebrity on an apology tour wearing it in an attempt to reform their image, but, you know, not too much.

That is the power and genius of what Ralph Lauren does (and why he is so massively successful). He creates clothes that invite in people from all walks of life into his world. You can be tacky or eccentric or conservative or flamboyant or all of these things at once, and still find pieces and outfits that suit you.

There was also something very real about what Lauren offered this season. Maybe it was all the pants, or the flat and low-heeled shoes, or the lack of overly theatrical layering, but these felt like clothes designed not for special occasions, but for living your life, which is exactly what most people on most days actually need.

Of course, there were plenty of gorgeous evening dresses, but the silhouettes were simple allowing the fabrics and embellishments to sing without overwhelming the wearer — the kind of dresses that one could imagine having in their closet and returning to year after year — especially the ones in blue, which were truly some of the loveliest Lauren has created in recent memory.

“Spring 2027 is an irreverent take on romance that creates a new elegance,” said Ralph Lauren in the notes to his latest show. “It’s about ways of dressing that celebrate ingenuity, originality, and character — the freedom and fun of creating a style that is truly personal.”

It is indeed.
